LLUME Jewelry Care & Composition

About Your Pieces

We make pieces that you can wear and love for a long time. Everything in our store is made with precious materials like gold, silver and hand-hammered brass. And like all precious things, some TLC goes a long way!

Your piece's page on our site explains how we've made it. Take a look there to find out more.

Here is a guide for some common types of jewelry:

  • Gold filled: Many necklaces are gold filled. This means they have a thick layer of gold on a silver or brass core. Gold-filled jewelry is a great option because it has a layer of gold on top of a base metal, like silver or brass. This means that it won't wear off over time and it's also more affordable than solid gold jewelry.
  • Gold plated: These pieces are artisan-made 925 silver cores with a gold layer. Sometimes we also plate over brass. Gold-filled and gold-plated jewelry are both great options because they have a layer of gold on top of a base metal. This means that they won't wear off over time and they're also more affordable than solid gold jewelry.
  • Hammered Brass: Our artisan cut and hammered brass pieces are composed of solid brass. Our hammered brass pieces are composed of solid brass, which gives them their beautiful, lustrous shine. To keep your brass looking its best, we recommend that you polish it with a jewelry cloth occasionally. Avoid contact with harsh chemicals and moisture.

Care

Caring for Gold Jewelry: Gold jewelry is beautiful and timeless, but it requires a little bit of extra care to keep it looking its best. We recommend taking off your jewelry before swimming or showering, as the chlorine or soap can damage the finish. Gold can also tarnish over time, so we recommend using a polishing cloth to clean it regularly. With a little bit of care, your gold jewelry will stay beautiful for years to come!

Caring for Brass: Brass is a beautiful copper and zinc alloy which means it is susceptible to tarnishing when exposed to the elements. Not to worry though, there are some easy ways to take care of brass and prevent it from tarnishing. You can easily polish brass with a polishing cloth to restore its shine.

Here are two of our Favorite Ways to Polish Brass Jewelry:

1. Fresh lemons: Cut a lemon in half and rub the cut side over your brass item. Lemon leaves are also effective but don't rub too hard or you may scratch your jewelry.

2. Baking Soda: Rub baking soda over the surface of your pieces with a soft cloth. You can put on a little pressure if you spread it around. Allow to sit for an hour or so and then rinse with warm water and buff dry.
